Im restoring an Allis Chalmers C for a 4-H project and the steering in the front is really loose along with the steering gear box located under the tool box. I took apart the front end and jacked it up but the gears seem to still be good no signs of wear. should I put shims behind the gears to make them so they will mesh together and make the steering tighter! what do u guys think?

There are 4 bolts that hold the pedestal to the front support. there should be shims between the 2 parts. remove shims as necessary to tighten the gear slop, but not too tight.
The steering gear box contains a worm gear and a steering arm with a pin that rides in the worm. These pins get worn and need to be replaced or built-up with weld and filed to fit the worm. Bob

when we took the pedestal off of the main frame of the tractor there were no shims between the pedestal and main frame so our thinking is putting shims behind the gears will make them closer together so they will mesh together but we dont want it too tight either. Thanks Blake
