I think I'm going to be able to finally put my D17 to work in the upcoming year.  The SIL will be getting ~38 acres and asked if the D17 was worthy/ready for some food plot work.  I haven't seen the place yet, so I don't know if it's pasture/sod or just old cropland to be worked up.

I runs good driving around, but I've never had anything behind it.

My question is this:
What size disc or cultivator/ripper will this pull?  10-12 foot?  It has a rear remote (untested).  It's supposed to be able to pull a 5 bottom plow, but I doubt we'll get one of those.

Hi GSTROM! I have a D 17 series 4 that I pull a 3 bottom snap coupler plow in the fall and use a 10 ft. MM disc and a 12ft. Brillion vibra-shank in the spring. In heavy clay the vibra-shank will dog the tractor if sunk to deep. The D17 is a work horse and will pull 10ft tillage equipment with out a problem. Hope this helps.

For a plow, stay with a three bottom. Should handle a disc up to 14' Ok. If you need a plow, I've got some extras...

More info please. What’s series is your D17? Series 1-3 have older high pressure/low volume hydraulics. Series 4 has low pressure/high flow(more modern).
What kind of food plot? Pheasant? Deer? Alfalfa/clover make great leafy protein source. A food plot doesn’t always require tillage. But if you feel it’s necessary, a light disking (10’-12’ light/medium duty)should suffice? To that end, you could try your county soil conservation office. Sometimes they offer a small no-til drill for free or a nominal fee?
Depending on which food plot seed species your planting, a less expensive 12 volt broadcast seeder might suffice? Frost seeding by tractor, pickup truck, or on foot by hand can all be successful. If weather is warmer & soil is not frozen, then a 1970s hay wheel rake can successfully “scratch-in” broadcasted seed into sod or cleared timber areas. Most older hay rakes are hand crank for their tine height, so no hydraulics required.

Gary, I've a D-17 series 1 and a 10ft field cultivator with new points and could only go 6" deep on the first pass that was grass ground and could go deeper after the first pass, also I've no weight on the old girl I'm sure if you did it would make a world of difference.
Like Mike I have a 3 bottom s/c plow with new lays on her that I would sell and would also let the field cultivator go. Good luck and have fun.

It's a D17 Series III.  Like I said, I haven't seen the place (except at night, when he needed help retrieving a monster buck he shot this fall), so I don't know his plans/needs.

I have a 3pt 5' disk, but I think I'll like a larger unit.  I suggested he contract any heavy tillage or spraying, and we could take it from there.  Deer and turkey are the target species, both are already there.

I scrapped a two bottom Dearborn plow that came with my Ford 9N - never used it, but it'd be fun to maybe have one again.  I can trailer a plow, but how do we transport a 10 - 12' disk/shank unit, if bought more than 10 miles away?

A lot depends on your soil type. I pull a 12’ disk, 3-16” semi mounted plow and a 16’ field cultivator with my D17. I’m in sandy ground so I added duals to help with traction. I wouldn’t want to go any bigger on any of the equipment, you need to remember that these tractors are 50-60 years old hence not new. Things are wore and it’s best not to push the limits with them.

-------------
190XT Series III, D17 Series IV, D15 Series II, All Crop 66 and a whole mess of equipment.

Yes, thanks.  I like the pics, you posted Travis.  Those implements are about as big as I was thinking too.

Gary I put my on a 18'+4' x 80" trailer with no troubles, it may be outside the 80" but still inside the fenders. You could take the hitch off also.

I'm probably jumping the gun here since we don't have access yet but,  how much would you want for the cultivator and can you send/post a pic?  Where are you in Iowa?
