I'm new to restoring, is there any tricks in installing a new oil pan gasket on a D17 series IV? I've got a leak.

I was going to ask the same question this morning. The pan gasket set came with these 2 bags. 1 is the retaining clips to hold the end gaskets. It looks like 3 for each end. Do you install 1 in the middle and 1 on each end? It also came with the bag of paper gaskets. 2 have little slots and 2 have bigger slots. Where do these go?

| First you stuff the pan "arch gaskets" inside an empty soup can for a couple weeks to make them get into the proper shape. Front support/front axle needs to be pulled out and the starter needs to be removed to get the pan to easily drop down without a fight. I always glue to pan side gaskets to the block first with something that sets up so they cannot move and let it dry. Then use the clips to position the arch gaskets to the pan (do not cut off the gaskets--they are not too long) and rub a thin layer of RTV all over the pan rails and arch gaskets. Put a blob (don't over do it) of RTV at each of the four corners of the side gaskets where the arch gaskets will contact. Ease the pan up into place (another set of hands would be nice) and SNUG the bolts so RTV is squeezed and let things dry for a while.....then come back and keep snugging things up so bolts won't come loose. Remember you could bend the pan if you go nuts on over torqueing the pan bolts. Those other little gaskets go between the rear main cap/upper rear seal holder and you may not be able to even use them in chassis. |
