Last weekend I was comparing my 1969 180 vs my dad's 1979 185 and noticed a difference in the torque tube.  On the 185 there was a reinforcement (I attached the picture above).  I am guessing Allis did this in response to the tractor breaking in 2 pieces at this area.  I am wondering if anyone has seen a 185 with this reinforcement break?  I would think it would help but I wonder how much.  I wonder when this was started.  I am guessing they made this modification in exhisting casting without making a new one.

All manufacturers have the right to change or improve their product for any reason they think necessary. That was what we call a "running change" and the model 200 tractor used the SAME torque tube as the 185. They may have felt the need for a change for the 200 and the 185 got it by inheritance. They weren't going to make two different torque tubes. The only 180-185-190-200's I've ever seen break a torque tube were tractors with a loader not mounted with a correct type loader frame.

...and if you look in the parts books, there are different gears / brgs in early vs late units on 180 vs 185's.

Just my guess that is just something to align the belt pulley assembly- if you would put one on,, seen one on a 200 !!
