From a limited sampling of materials, I've decided that 80 grit glass works way better than 70 grit sodium bicarb.  The sodium bicarb could probably be substituted with tiny marshmallows :(

i have always used Black Beauty..... coal slag.

That's what I started with, but the particle size was too large.  I don't have enough CFMs to use a larger tip and the compressor is 300 feet away from the barn in the garage (no 220 in the barn, 300 feet of 3/8 hose).   I was really happy with the 80 grit glass.  It cleaned really well and fast.  The only problems were that it needs a shaker to keep it from clogging, even with a drier on the line (pressure pot is too flat on the bottom) and it kept eating holes in the (brass) outlet valve.
