My ib rims are in good shape, except the galvanized coating is pocked/chipped. Painting the rims silver shows the unsmooth surface. What works well to make them look better/smoother surface - the remaining galvanized surface is tough to sand off.

If your only going to paint portions of the rim, and trying to fill in dimples / rust areas... you might use a THICK cold galv paint like this...

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Cold galvanizing works well in this application but do allow it to dry thoroughly. It will then sand well and paints over easily. Again, do let it dry thoroughly. Used to do this on communication and navigation towers often. On airfields themselves, they have to be orange and white. If you use a good quality top coat the "repair" will last years.

I have also used that Rustoleum cold galvanizing paint. Seems a little thicker but depending on the pits you're filling may not hide them
