I have a starter from an older b with the push rod and starter button on the bottom. Can I rotate the nose on that and use it on a newer b with the pull rod and button on top, and if so what is the procedure?

YES you can... as you said, take out the two long bolts going all the way thru the starter case.. Dont take everything apart... just rotate the nose 180 degrees relative to the switch and put the bolts back in. .... the GROUND BOLT/ anchor should still be in the right place in the nose.

look here about the 4 minute mark... just dont pull the nose out more than 1/4 inch so the brushes on the BACK dont come out of the holder... DONT take off the back end.

there may be a hole on the other side to put it in...  if you look at the movie at 6:15 you can see him slide the armature back into the nose.... So you COULD pull the nose all the way off of the housing and look at the pin, drill a hole, etc.... Just TRY not to pull the rotor out of the back end or you will have to reassemble the brushes..

Not a big deal, but kind of a PITA if you have not done it before..
