Well, I guess I got a front end and a clutch pedal too....
Now I just need the block to go with it (and hand brakes, and ..... lots of other stuff....)
I really didn't want to take it, but after driving 6 hours, I needed something to show for it.... Guess I have another "project"....
Anybody got a real dead, real early, donor B ? Can trade an uncracked 1940 block.... (that is about all that is usable other than the F/E, tranny and clutch pedal... :<( )
Also, a big thanks to DaveinMA for letting it "rest" at his place for a couple days before heading west.

Glenn, I've got a 1940 B I'll sell you. Has hydraulics, hand breaks, cleaned carb, rebuilt mag, and a few other things. Hasn't been run in a few years. Let me know if your interested.

We all got together and made a 'B' for the "Build a B" project. Maybe some of us have some bits laying around that you could use to complete that poor old thing!!

If you have a B block with the -9 suffix, I'm all ears! Also the rims and clamps for a B between 101 and 501?? Anybody?

Glenn and I had a nice visit when he arrived here this afternoon. The corpse-and-trailer are parked behind the barn until he returns Thursday. You guys with early B parts need to help him bring this one back to life. LOL

Very cool Glenn! That's quite a project ahead of you. I must admit, if I had found that low of a serial number, I would have taken it on too!

Glenn, what is the number on the current block? I'm assuming that it sounds like your looking for a replacement?

tyler,
it's a -12 block, with generator bosses cast and tapped. Have not got the actual engine serial number, but it sure don't match up to Tractor No. B119.

Glenn, I guess in this case instead of needing a "roundtuit" to get this one going you need the "partsroundtuit". LOL I could fabricate and send you a roundtuit, but don't think I have any parts for an early B. Wish you luck and God Bless.

Glenn, I know of a 38 B here in Wisconsin for sale for 1500. I will forward you the email. The guy put a ton of money into having the sheetmetal all fixed up and it shows as the sheetmetal looks flawless. I don't know the serial number on it though.

Steve,
I had left you a message on your phone.... I guess it didn't record the sweet sound of that 125 purring....
After I tore the carb apart and shot cleaner thru it both ways in all the jets, it lit right up. Good oil pressure, no knocks, the throttle took it up and down smoothly. That was the good news out of the whole thing.
Richard - I'll be in touch.....
PS I got several 38 blocks, just none that are that early.... Mine are all -10

Glenn, looks like the buzzards picked her pretty clean before you could get there. LOL!
Nice low serial number B to start with though. If you could find a low number 38 engine, that would be a start, but how far do you go when you basically have a tranny, finals, and a torque tube to work with? Sorry to say it won't pass muster with the correct police, but if you're like me, you don't care about that anyway. If I had the time and available resourses that you do, i'd probably go for it.

So with everybody looking for parts, I would like to find an early block
for my B #254. It has a 39 block in it now. The back wheels evidently
aren't correct either but Oh Well.

Glenn: Contrattulations on your find. I have the following that youcan have if you have any use fot them. Set of cylinder liners 3.25 These are in good shape.Set of front wheels and tires from a 39B. I believe they are the original tires. Rims rusted but may be able to be cleaned up enough for a show tractor. Plow depth control lever for a 39B. I think that I have a set of rockshaft brackets. You can have any or all of theese if ykou are interested. I will never use tham.

Sooo, what's wrong with the toque tube? I'm assuming it might be the bosses for the steering box broken off? What about the finals? They'll be fine! Little sandblasting, little welding. Good as new!LOL! Seriously, if they are still original, there are plenty of guys out there that can repair cast iron. Rods and processes for cast welding have come a long way. Main thing is keeping it at a consistent temperature, not cooling it too fast, and relieving any stress that builds up in the metal. Come on Glenn, you got us all pulling for you now(actually, we just want to see how far you'll go.LOL!). You can do it!!!

After being on this forum for a number of years now I'm positive I can answer the question "how far will Glenn go?" lol. The answer is pretty darn far!!!!!!!!
|

The torque tube had the steering box snapped off. The cast housing of the Gemmer box bent, but the torque tube relieved the stress by breaking out of the bolt holes. Same deal on the one final, the whole rear section has gone missing. There is a reason the drawbar is turned forward, it's because there is nothing left to bolt it to going the other way.....
I'm pretty sure I have those castings with the same pattern numbers though.
I think this one is going to sit until I line up a few more parts though... Some of the stuff offered up so far is just not within reach of a short term road trip.

So Glenn, if you want the drawbar facing back, all you need to do is remove it, swap the finals from side to side and bolt the drawbar back on. Simple fix, right? LOL

Bob,
It was in the woods in southeast New Hampshire.
It originally came from Massachusetts.
I found out about it years ago in one of my many conversations about pintle hitches. At the time the owner told me about it, he did not want to sell. It was represented to be a matching block and transmission, and complete with all the unique parts for a super early B. I never got pictures, I just took it on faith. Last year, I got word it would be sold and I was first on the list.
Imagine, lucky me, I guess that made me the "winner".... LOL
Anyway, my trip to the New England area was all paid for, so it cost me nothing to drag the trailer along. I hesitated at bringing it back, after I saw what it really was. But, in the end, the price came down to the absolute maximum I would have paid for a transmission with a real low number and a '38 front end with the original wedge bolts.
Yep, I guess that makes me the winner....

Glen, with a little time I may be able to round up most of what you need. I have an early 38 block somewhere out back, wheel clamps are easy, torque tube and finals are easy.
I have a real nice set of rear rims; all restored in fact, but they are for my B450 project- sorry. I spent a few years rounding up those rims so that may be your toughest find. If I'm not mistaken Ray O'Neil still has one of those rims. Ray is where I got one of mine. I know where there is another sitting on a shelf. I gave it to the guy several years ago but he's not interested in parting with it now. The good news is you can complete the restoration and run it with newer rears until you can come up with the correct ones then switch them out.

Brad,
I saw some nice rims already that are very close by, but I have to talk to the guy they are promised to. I'm looking for a good block with the -9 suffix. I have a good -10 one already, and Gary said I could have his -9 that was cracked, so worst case, I have one that I could get repaired.
I guess I am going to have to get some handbrake levers made up, unless you know where there is an extra set of ones threaded at the top for the plastic knobs...
I pretty much have everything else I need around, I just need to go "state hopping" to pick stuff from some of my stashed parts tractors.
Send me a PM if you do have a good -9 block, or the handbrakes..
Thanks,
Glenn

Great news on the rear rims. I have a few sets of handbrakes but not sure if I have usable duplicates of the plastic knob type. I'm also not sure if the plastic knob handles were threaded of friction? Memory says friction, but in either case making them from the later type should be easy. I'll look for a block.

Odds are high that AC used stock knobs from a knob maker and that those knobs are still being made. Look at McMaster-Carr for them.

Glenn, If you need some brake levers turned, could you use a later brake lever and thread it or turn for a press fit? If so, I could machine some for you. Any ideas how long these were used? Were they used on the 37's? Charlie
