Shot this guy Saturday night in the Wasatch mountains just south of the Wyoming border. Public land ,fair chase ,unguided bowhunt. He fell .2 miles from my electric bike, 2 miles from camp . 5 friends helped me haul him out that night. 62 yard shot ,through both lungs , he didn't go far and saw him fall. Now trying to get back to make Rantoul by Saturday.

That's really something to be proud of! Any bull elk harvested legally is but unguided with a bow on public ground.... Congratulations and hope you make Rantoul with time to spare!

| Jay, 5X3 refers to the number of points on the antlers. Five points on one side three on the other. Seems to be a west of the Missouri kind of description. Mostly elk and mule deer. Midwest we call ‘‘em by the total number of antler points. Ten point buck or “ten pointer” BTW, impressive shot at 62yds with a bow. For me that takes a fair amount of practice. What’s your equipment. Looks to be still in velvet?

Sixty two yards with a bow is quite a shot. And one that nice unguided on public land is an accomplishment. Congratulations!

Thanks for the comments guys. Electric bike ; I have an electric mountain bike. Basically a bicycle with knobby tires ,little bit of suspension and an electric motor which boosts your performance. As you pedal the motor kicks in and helps. Quiet Kat is a major brand, I have a cheaper version. Helps my old fat ass get over the mountain a lot faster . Forest service has mixed enforcement of regulations. Can't take a motorized vehicle but they will allow these in certain areas. I shoot a Bowtech Reign 7 set at 72 pounds, been shooting a bow since 8 . Elk are large targets. 16 inches vertical and 20 inches horizontal are the vital dimensions . I probably would not shoot that far at a whitetail. 306 pounds went to the processor. 203 are going home with me. Packaged and hard frozen and topped off with dry ice. In Lincoln Nebraska tonight, home tomorrow and Rantoul Saturday. I got lucky, after finding it another hunter came by. He went back to our camp and alerted them and told them where I was. 5 friends with pack frames, lights and game bags showed up. Easiest pack out that I have ever done. Walked 1/5th of a mile and rode the bikes down the hill. Oh yeah, if any of you want some it's going for around a 1000 dollars a pound. Just let me know how much you want

I joke about the meat and how expensive this endeavor was . Time off of work and the memories created are the real treasures.

Pat, I understand the pricing on the meat!! I love the taste of Elk but not exactly feasible on the economic side! Maybe I should build some tall fence and start raising them darn things around here? Nah.

Congratulations Pat. Double lung bow hit is very gratifying. Were you hunting in the rain/mist? Wife & I were driving thru those parts (east bound on I80)last Thursday morning after heavy rains near Salt Lake City Wednesday evening.

It rained every day that we were up on the mountain. Saturday and Sunday were not to bad 19th and 20th. But Monday ,Tuesday ,Wednesday were downpours. Got my elk on Sunday and it was vacation after that. My friend Ralph sat in the rain for 3 days and then traveled back with me Thursday/Friday. When he got home he didn't feel good, went to the doctor and found out he has pneumonia . Weather runs in cycles out there. 2015 -2020 were extremely dry, no rain at all. 2020 - now has been very wet . Probably getting rain somewhere else isn't.
