Has anyone ever heard of or seen a steiger tractor with an Allis Chalmers power director transmission in it from the factory? A friend of mine who works as a parts man at a local dealership/NAPA store was quizzing me about it because one of his customers supposedly has one and is trying to find parts for it. Says it came from the factory that way. I'm going to get back to him and find out more about it as to the year and model of it. It's something I've never heard of. The guy supposedly likes it. I guess Steiger/CaseIH parts books have no record of it ever being done. Maybe it's a rare one. Darrel

i saw a similer type shift in a stieger at a sale one day, i mentioned it to a buddy as it had the same shift paturn as my AC tractor, with a push button on the floor. don't remember the model tho. it didn't dawn on me that it may have been an AC tranny! may have been a panther, as that's the most common one used around here. but don't remember. been thinking about trading my 7080 for a stieger, but will have to wait for later as no crop this year!

There are no Steigers around here but I thought that I remembered that they had used an Allison automatic in some models for a short while.

I don't remember the models but yes Steiger did use the Allis-Chalmers Power Director and I believe some models may have used the final drives and axles. PD for sure was used. When I worked parts at the CaseIH dealer we had one in the shop and the mechanic called the local AGCO dealer for advise. I don't remember what was wrong. Something minor.

Thanks for info, guys. Calvin, Steiger did offer the Allison automatic as an option for a while. The dealership where I worked sold one in the late 80's. Kind of wierd to drive, as that time when you would get into a high horse power tractor, the last thing you would expect is no clutch pedal, and a little tiny shift lever coming out of the counsel. Yes steiger did use an A-C PD transmission in the PUMA series tractors and was the same tranny as the 4w-305. Also if you see a PUMA with Bar axles rather than planetaries, those are allis axles/rearends. My dad works on steigers quite often and he knows a lot about them.

Yes, they did use AC power director transmission in one of the smaller models. I dont remember which one, I let the CaseIH dealer borrow my 7030-7080 book to work on it. At the time my partner worked at the dealer.

Interesting stuff. At one point in time, Steiger is building 4 wheelers for AC, later they are putting AC components in their tractor. Learn something new every day. Go figure. Darrel

Interesting you guys have discovered this. For some reason this always was is a big secret. Here is the deal, This was only done in 1985 on the Cougar models CR and KR series, 1225 and 1280. The trans and the adjustable bar axles (although most had the Raba outboard planetaries) were supplied by Allis Chalmers, no other Steiger models had AC trans or axles, the Pumas had ZF axles, and a 12 speed full powershift.

I also should have added all 1986 and up Cougar 1000 series only had the 12 speed power shift.
