A while ago one of the members --I believe Steve B--mentioned converting the starter switch on a WD to a more modern solenoid type. I'd like to do that. However, my question is how do you go from that flat standard "post" on an old starter to a threaded lug? When I took the starter apart it appears to be soldered in there. I tried drilling the copper and tapping a 1/4 inch thread into it. That didn't work out well. Suggestions?

You need to get a threaded stud that solders in to replace the original contact.  The old contact is unsoldered and removed.  The new threaded stud is soldered in and installed in place of it.  You may need the insulating components for the new stud as well.  Depending on what you have for tooling, it might be worth it to have a shop that rebuilds starters do that change over for you.
