Ok, I know this seams like a simple task. But I have read multiple manuals, watched multiple videos, read multiple post. What is the best way to adjust brakes on these tractors? I just replaced the brake pads and a drum on my D17, although I’ve studied each of these options I’m still scratching my head on the best way to adjust them before I paint it? I don’t want to go through this process again after a fresh coat of paint. I feel I have them close but would like to hear from those that know these tractors inside and out? Of course I realize they will need to be adjusted over time but correctly adjusting them in the beginning should give me a few years before I have to get into them again. ------------- 1968 B-208, 1976 720 (2 of them)Danco brush hog, single bottom plow,52" snow thrower, belly mower,rear tine tiller, rear blade, front blade, 57"sickle bar,1983 917 hydro, 1968 7hp sno-bee, 1968 190XTD |

| Not the final answer here but I adjust top bolt to get pedal play then adjust rear screw to try and get same travel of both shoes. Kinda tricky to see what they are doing. You have to concentrate on the shoes not the linkage. Object of the game is to have shoes equidistant from drum....same amount of travel or you wear one shoe out. |

I jack up one side, turn in the bolt in the back until I feel a drag by turning the tire, then back off 1/2 turn. Then adjust the band bolt till it drags, then back that off a bit. Charlie that’s the way I’ve tried it. Seams like the right side with the new drum has less pedal play than the left. The pedals don’t have a locking bar so the sideways action of my right foot to lock both brakes is off. Right grabs before the left. Pulling full hay wagons is a concern when going down hill. Steve you are correct, it is difficult to see what’s going on. I assume you have a book? I've adjusted brakes on my 45's according to procedure and it seems to work pretty darn good. |

| This is from the WD45 operator’s manual. Is that any help? Or are you working on D17? I just checked the service manual and it has exact same procedure. |

| Series 3 and 4 D-17's are adjusted at the pedals rod. Older models and WD/WD-45 the rod length is a fixed number so many inches long. I always thread a 3/8" nut on the rod at the correct length and run in the rod until it touches and then good to go. |

I probably need to use the tractor some before I get too excited over this since the brakes are all new. A little break in of the new pads will probably help. Presently I have more drag on the right side so I will loosen that side some.
