My C died when trying to start it the starter was barely turn over the starter was twitching a little. If I tried the starter 4or 5 times it would eventually make a turn. Took a starter off my other C and a different battery, same thing. Turns over by hand fine, pulled the plugs no better. Depressed the clutch and looked to see if was releasing looked good same thing. Thought maybe the ring gear was slipping on the flywheel but pulling the plugs should have made a difference. I think I am not seeing the forest through the trees. Any ideas ?

Bad ground is the first thing that comes to mind. Could be either the battery is not grounded well or the starter itself is not making a good ground with the bellhousing.

look at the cable ends.... lugs on bolts ( ground starter) should be shinny... Terminals and clamps on battery may look clean, but could have a black oxide coating on them.. use sand paper / wire brush to get down to the LEAD or COPPER face... must be CLEAN / SHINNY. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

My WD-45 did that. It had just spun over so I thought it was something else. Turned out the ground cable was not making good contact at the battery post. ------------- Everything is impossible until someone does it! WD45-trip loader 1947 c w/woods belly mower, 1939 B, #3 sickle mower 1944 B, 2 1948 G's. Misc other equipment that my wife calls JUNK! |

Pull the starter out and ground it to something and try it. It could be the starter needs work. Could be something as simple as new bushings in the ends or brushes. I'd get the kit and do it all... ------------- "Allis-Express" 19?? WC / 1941 C / 1952 CA / 1956 WD45 / 1957 WD45 / 1958 D-17 |

In the original post, he said that he tried a starter from a different C and it did the same thing. It sounds to me that the problem is something with the tractor, not both starters.

my guess.. Odds are BOTH battery cables NEED to be replaced. 6 volt ones need to be big and fat ,like thumbs, 12v ones can be skimpy like pinkies.... Should be 'molded' cables NOT 'clamp on' connectors. Copper cables rot from the inside out, can look fine, but 'rotten to the core'.. As an aside, My #1 D-14( last one of 4) ,starter died. Got a rebuilt starter in 24 hrs,locally,thing of beauty..seemed a shame to scratch it during the install. sad thing is I'd just sold my running parts D-14 WITH a newish starter for the same as this new starter cost me....oh well... have to admit 'Troy' starts real fast now..... ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |
