Just got a rough 180 that needs some work for a winter project ; it runs decent but when you have it idleing and go to the front by the air cleaner it sounds like compression coming thru , cant really feel it but it has a certain noise , noticed a little oil in the water; no water in the oil ; could it be a headgasket leaking a little ?

Oil in the water - definitely head gasket.  Had that happen many years ago on my 175.

compression at air intake is leaking a intake valve(s).

Could also have cavitation in the cylinder sleeves letting water in the oil, but that will usually keep letting water in if it sits for a long time, not just when it is running, but if it's just a slight leak, like past the sleeve o rings, then it could only leak when the coolant system is pressureized.

he says oil in water, no water in oil. Pin holes in sleeves will quickly fill the pan with water(coolant).

Oil in the water? I would be looking at an engine oil cooler leaking, unless this engine doesn't have one.
