My d17 series 3 has started to stick in reverse. When I force it out it engages another gear and locks up. The forks don’t appear worn and the gears look good but the reverse gear seems a little loose on the shaft but easily moves by hand and no sign of sticking. Not sure if I should be looking at the shifting forks or do I have to get the tranny apart.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Unless I'm misunderstanding your problem, I'd guess the ball on the bottom tip of the gearshift is getting out of position and sliding out of the shifting lug notch ?? I just rebuilt an old D-17 shift cover that has spent the last 40 or 50 years as a loader tractor. The gearshift tip ball was soooo worn out and the shifting lug notch was too. I strategically built things up and carefully reshaped them with a grinder to get it back into usable condition. What do you do to get things back where they belong ?? Remove the shift lever and reposition ??

yes to removing the cover and I could simply move the parts by hand and nothing seems to be sticking. The ball at the end of the shift rod looks good or not worn but it is not perfectly round. What should it look like. Also is there any type of inner lock between the reverse gear and the other gears like the shuttle between the other two rails

Should be a interlock pin (in a shift rail) yes, to keep you from engaging two gears at once. So, it must be missing ??

there is one interlock pin but I wondered if there were two. I think you are right on however in suggesting that the ball may be coming out of the notch when it is shifted. I may need to add a little weld or learn to hold the shifter to the right to better hold it in place Thanks for the advice
