Simple question, what type of oil is supposed to be used in the torque tube where the power director resides? I don't have an operators manual and the service manuals doesn't have any of this information. I remember seeing on a post somewhere that there were people using different types of oil, and it was suggested to continue using what was used in the past. I'm a second or third owner of this tractor purchased off a used lot. If you have the oil capacity as well for the torque tube/power director chamber that would be helpful too. Getting ready to slide the two halves back together after replacing some broken power director parts and need to get some oil.

Snowman: Per AC Service Bulletin S-1493 the D15 tractors both Series I and Series II take 9 quarts of 20 weight ML spec. or its equivalent.

AGCO 821 or equivalent works well too.

A universal trans/hydraulic oil will do fine.

Op Man'l says 20w, change 2 times / year. If you have other newer tractors use what you put in their hydr / tran. Or Something that's equivalent to AGCO 821 fluid.

All lubricants have improved over the decades since that owners manual was printed. 20W non-detergent oil was what they had then and it worked. Modern day Hy-Tran/ Hy-Gard/ Universal Trans/Hydraulic/ AGCO PermaTran/AGCO 821XL all work and are a 10W-30 viscosity. No Company rewrites a 50 year old owners manual. You just have to figure it out and take advice from those who know what now works.

Thank you for the feedback, still pondering which way to go on this. Non-detergent 20W oil is hard to find locally, I called an AGCO dealer and they have a regular version of the AGCO Permatran 821 (at $138 for 5 gal pail which is a semi synthetic) and Permatran 821XL that is for CVT transmissions. Or I can cheap out, with an 821 equivalent at Tractor Supply.
Cost isn't a driving factor, but purchasing something that works best and doesn't eventually leak out of gaskets and o-rings is my concern. Straight 20W vs 10W-30? Just looking for a few more opinions on this.

An 821 equivalent is going to be better than the 20W weight non-detergent of years ago and cost effective.
As for finding an oil/fluid that won't eventually leak out of gaskets, O-rings and seals; I see that as more of an issue with the gaskets, O-rings, and seals, than the oil/fluid you use, since whatever you use should be in the same weight range as the 20W weight.

modern transmission hydralic oil is what you would get if it was at our shop , sludge and crud in engines and transmissions is almost a thing of the past even with poor maintanace

Oils/fluids have evolved over the years. I am betting, if the equivalent of AGCO 821 Power Fluid had been available when your D-15 was built, it would have been the recommended fluid.
