Ford 2120 front wheel assist tractor. I was asked to look at why the little ford didn't have any steering this spring. Got up there and thought the system was oil from transmission and some how leaked out got air locked in the PS. Then discovered it had it's own oil reservoir. We didn't have any PS fluid so dumped in Universal trans-hydraulic oil. and we had power steering again. system got sucked up what I had poured in and I topped it off. had him drive around some and he came back and the fluid was coming out the breather hole with air in the oil. That was odd, had him turn left and the oil would suck down out of the top of the reservoir, but turn right it would pour out the hole , even letting go from turning the wheel, the thing would ooze. Turn the wheel all the way to the left and just hold it there, the front wheel will relax back to the right some. QUESTION is what going on? is it sucking air in the pump shaft? The rubber lines that come from and go to the tank look good and are tight. Is there something involving the steering orbit shaft? The tractor looks like it has 3 pumps driven off the engine. PS is back side of front flange on left side. It has a cylinder for steering behind the axle and the rod end is to the right. My thought is it is sucking air through the pump, but that is just a guess. Told him to keep an eye on the oil level and when it gets down far enough, that the oil will get room to release the air out of it before getting to the vent.
OR... do we have to drain the Universal oil out and put actual power steering oil in it. Thanks for any thoughts /comments on this issue. jc
