I am putting my 17 back together after replacing the timing gears(govenor weights exploded!) and noticed the fork is about a 1/2" away from the bearing. Shouldn't the fork be against the bearing?

Disconnect the link rod from the carb to governor arm. Pull the hand throttle down half way or more. The fork should be in solid contact with the thrust brg assembly. Make sure the governor arm is free to move back and forth and nothing got bent when the weights exploded. Now, while you are this far, adjust (bend) the link rod or governor arm so the link rod just slips back into the gov arm hole with the carb wide open and gov arm clear back.
