I have an AC 170 tractor always ran good daily as a blading tractor. Now for the last few weeks it will run good and then fall on its face like it looses fuel or run like a 2 cylinder than it will go back to running fine. I replaced the plugs wires coil and points cleaned the carb and fuel lines incluing tank. I have set the carb many times with no luck and it still is running fine when it wants to. Any suggestions thanks Jeremy

A poor running engine can be a result of electrical and/or fuel issues. Best to work on one 1st before going to another. I usually start by thoughly going thru the fuel side 1st; making sure the tank does not have stuff that can plug up the bottom, clean sediment bowl/screen, manifold is properly sealed to the head, air flow to the carb thru the air cleaner, good flow to carb, and thoughly cleaning the carb and all the little passages with brake cleaner, thin wire, and compressed air. Once I am satified that the fuel/air supply is good, I will then move to the electrical side; check the voltage to the coil with key on/off, check voltage from coil to points with key on/off, clean/replace/set point gap, check all plug and coil wires for continuity...and make sure someone has not installed the carbon core wires, check cap/cover for cracks, the condensor can sometimes cause issues, as can an intermittent ground on the points.
Trouble shooting and diagnosing can be a PITA, however, the reward comes when the gremlins are disposed of and the engine runs as it should.

Not much else to add from what Greg said.  I would also make sure the charging system is working and that the main ground and power connections were good and clean and be sure that 12 volts is constant to the coil.
