good morning,
i have a 175 diesel engine. the clutch was replaced a year ago. i inherited this tractor after all the work was done and not sure what all was replaced. but at low rpm the tractor will rattle and it will stop with the clutch pressed in. also it is getting harder and harder to shift. to get in first i have to slowly let out clutch as im pushing it into gear. same with reverse. i think it might be the throw-out bearing i would of thought they would of changed it with the clutch but i don't know. id like to fix it if this is abnormal.

Is it trying to grind gears or just have to give it a shove?

Sounds like the clutch plate isn’t returning…
I had that problem on my 45 but it hadn’t had that gone through so I was running it (pulling it in a shop for the night) and it made a terrible noise and it wouldn’t move after that, ended up the foot clutch plate had sheered the rivets in the center…
Had to split the tractor and I replaced it with a rebuilt clutch, now it drives fine.
Otherwise I’ve heard that if the tabs? on the plate are not equal it won’t completely disengage…

Let's clear up something. Any 175 tractor when it IDLES slowly and the power director clutch is in high range, will probably make a rattling noise directly down from the instrument panel. When you place the hand lever in neutral it will quit and it will also quit when you push in the foot clutch. THIS IS PRETTY NORMAL !! The warmer the hydraulic oil, the more noticeable it will be. Next problem, shifting.....it is also pretty normal that you MAY have to ease out on the clutch a bit to get the transmission fully into a gear. This too is pretty NORMAL. It doesn't happen all the time, but it can and does happen. So, by your description of what's going on, I say you have no issues other than inexperience.

dr allis i appreciate the reply and im not going to say im the most experianced on this tractor. i did assume it was normal last year but it just seems like it has gotten worse. i know my wd does it but not to the extent of the 175. i thought id ask before something went wrong before hay season pops its head out here.

Keep the transmission, hydraulics and final drives full of oil and never grind gears when shifting and likely that tractor will outlive both of us.

WD through the D and 100 series, NEVER grind the gears! Come to a full stop and allow the clutch to fully disengage the transmission. Then shift into the selected gear. Sometimes a little a clutch foreplay is required to get into gear. As Dr Allis said it’s pretty normal. Grind the gears and you will have a gear jumper. We always bring them to a stop, low idle to change gears. If not, transmission issues are in the future.
