Big scare yesterday, got my trusty 720 out of the shed to do some sickle mowing. Checked the oil 2 weeks ago and then started her for the first time after winter hibernation. She fired right up and I let her warm up and then shut her back down. Picked up a new filter and oil yesterday and pulled her out of the shed to get to the main shop to change it. As I let her warm up she began to smoke and run rough. Finally she quit running while I was retrieving the oil and filter. She wouldn’t restart. After about 10 minutes of scratching my bald head, I pulled the dipstick and much to my surprise it was way overfilled. And then I smelled the dipstick, the Oder of gasoline. Darn carb stuck after I shut it down 2 weeks ago I guess. Drained the oil/gasoline mixture and my heart sank as I was thinking the worst. Bearings wiped out, scared cylinders etc...thankfully after looking at the drained fluids I didn’t see any metal fragments. Let it drain overnight thinking the gas would evaporate. Changed the oil and filter. The gas coming past the rings actually flooded the plugs shutting it down. Replaced the plugs and it fired right up. Oil pressure light went out like it supposed to and it ran like it always does. After 5 minutes of running with no strange sounds I mowed for about an hour. No more smoke and she ran flawlessly. What a relief. Installed a fuel shutoff for piece of mind. Never been an issue but it goes to show it can happen.

That's good but when you want to check for metal in oil , take the oil filter apart .

Good point Fred, ran it again yesterday with no issues. Hoping I dodged a bullet.
