It was only 3 miles from home and most of the work has already been done. That's my reasoning for buying this 1956 WD45 diesel. As you can see, the engine needs a bit of work - nothing unusual for these diesels. Original block and crank were no good, so he got another engine, so we have lots of parts to pick from. Block and head are going to the machine shop this week and I have recruited our former AC dealer mechanic (Earle Trewin) to build it. The previous owner bought the tractor in pieces and went through everything (except the engine). The engine has the double pulleys, the generator has the drive on the back and the steering shaft and hood were missing, so I am assuming it originally had power steering and someone borrowed it. Owner had a new hood custom made, but our chances of finding a factory power steering unit are pretty slim! Comes with a major overhaul kit, valve kit, gasket set, rebuilt injector pump, reground camshaft and polished crank. After the engine, it will need wiring, gauges, steering, rear rims and 4 tires. I will also paint it a more appropriate shade of persian orange 1. The power steering is not as hard to find as the gas. The diesel power steering tank is different. I modified a gas until I found the correct one. The starter lever is different on the diesel. The steering unit on the frame is the same as a gas. Be careful about buying one that sat in the weather a long time. Water stays in there and eats the valve spool and cracks the case. The hoses are always a challenge. Something to look for while the engine is at the shop. ------------- http://lonsallischalmers.com |

Unfortunately yes. You know I can't have a tractor that doesn't run! I might be optimistic, but if all the stars align, I think we might get this 45 done by the end of the year. Yes, the generator does have the drive for the power steering, but I will switch it for one without the drive, unless I win the lottery and find a complete factory PS unit cheap! The rest of the tractor is all finished. Previous owner did everything: front axle, transmission, hand clutch, brakes, radiator recore, body work and paint. I have to do engine, clutch, wiring, rear rims and tires. I will also paint it a more appropriate PO 1 color. Dropped the head and block off at the machine shop today. The guy is very familiar with these engines, been fixing them for over 40 years. So I think it's in good hands. Price? Will be watching your thread, interested to see how your rebuild goes. Hope it goes well, I’ve heard the horror stories of these diesels and now that I own one I’m interested to see how you get along. With front tires from my 57 WD45 and rear tires from my 54 WD45, the rest of the tractor is one step closer to rolling into the shop. Doesn't have its own rubber or rear rims. Block and head were delivered to the machine shop a month ago (no news is good news I hope). My former AC dealer will build the engine, fortunately I was given lots of extra engine parts. Fab shop is making a new steering shaft. Lots of parts on order through AGCO and other vendors - still need to track down some NLA parts. New rear rims have been ordered. I was already sitting on a new pair of BKT 14.9 x 28s that I had earmarked for the 54 45 (it will have to wait for a new pair). Got a bunch of paint already delivered. Ready to start tearing down for new paint. Some engine parts already starting to get painted. Previous owner painted it a color he liked - we will paint it a color we like (more in line with PO 1).
