Went to looking at Pickups to replace the aged 1999 F250 rusted hulk I own, pricing Crew Cab Dually or SRW but all in 4wd.  Almost slipped off my chair as I looked at 5-6 year old ALL THREE Major US Makes 3/4 and ton trucks.  from 90-180,000 miles, Some HUGE Gas engine, many Cummins and Power Stroke or GM Duramax engines, All the Diesels were in excess of $55,000, that was Lowest, up to $84,000, on a FIVE Year old pickup.

So gathered up for a Look at 1999 F250 7.3l Diesel Fords.  HOLY SCMOLLY, 185,000 miles 4x4 extended cab 7.3 auto with some Minor rust at rear cab corners, 8' box, ALREADY SOLD, at $15,980, CA Truck.  NM Truck only difference Short Bed and 146,000miles $16730 and ALREADY Gone.

JUST WOW!!!!

Called dealer here, He in no way can even Touch a Dually Crew in ANY MAKE under five years old for under $60,000.  Co retiree decided he needed a NEW GM gas Crew Cab Dually 8' bed to tow a 40' rolling palace, $89,720 and MINIMAL Attributes.

Sticker Shock is not even close.  Most dealers are getting Sticker MSRP and 5% increase on New here, WHEN they can get one.

I have a 2015 RAM DRW, Cummins, Mega Cab, fairly new tires, 60 gallon tank in the bed, towing package.  Hauls like a dream!  Only has tad under 40k miles, I don't drive much unless pulling a camper.  I'll sell it to you for $65K cash or wire transfer!

A 'Top of the Line' 2023 Chevy Silverado High Country 2500HD Diesel with a few added extra features is Sticker Priced at around $105,000 CAN.

A similar equipped GMC Sierra Denali is even higher.

Then Semi trucks, When resumed driving locally a Day Cab(NO Sleeper) Tandem Road Tractor new from Peterbilt or Western Star were roughly Same Pricing, Average $180,000 in '21.  Move to '22 that adjusted to over $210,000 SAME EXACT SPECS.  And currently be Lucky to get one for $235-250.  Why you may ask, to Cover EXTREME Warranty expenses of the Current Garbage DPF/DEF DOC systems and electronics messes these are.

Same is true of the current runs of GM, FORD, CHRYSLER Trucks and Cars.  Emissions Failures HUGE Expense, Electronics NIGHTMARES are expanding as to Modules failures where one of Seven to Nine can shut a vehicle completely down.

Guess I don't know why this is a shock "anymore".  It's been this way for close to 3 years now.  It's totally crazy, I agree, but been going on long enough the surprise of it is over.

I guess i am surprised at the DEMAND for a truck over $75,000..... you would think there was a limited number of people wanting something like that ?

I bought a fully loaded 2013 F150 Lariat in  2019 for $25,000.. had 70,000 miles.... Only has 100,000 now ...... probably keep it forever.

I don't get it either.  I don't know what's worse though, paying $75,000 for something new, or WAY to much for age and miles for something old.  Pick your poison.  I keep stuff fixed as long as I can, but there comes a point, both mechanically and RUST where you have to do something.

Used to take out a 48 or 60 month loan, now 72 or 84 is the norm.  You about have to if you want any sort of life.  HATE paying that much for that long!!

I'd say you bought your truck in the nick of time.

I'm assuming because difference between trade and new values are less significant?

MIght be worth considering a rebuild of an older unit... If you have a good frame... you could spend $4k on a motor, $4K on a transmission, $8K on body work / paint, $3K on interior/ seats , $1K on new fuel and brake lines....... $20K ????  Maybe ?

Thought on that with my 99, Cab, build a bed, change some things up, better interior, STILL is a 99 and at some point that price bottom will fall away.

I don't know them older pickups are showing so high prices. I see people listing 70s pickups from $10,000.00 up these days.

I saw online ad for a twin except color to my 2010 F150 4x4, 5.4 v8, std cab. Similar miles; 110 to 120K. The used car lot is asking more than I paid new in Nov 2009. But it's just like tractors, the new are so high that used prices get jacked up also.
I'm so glad I bought my brothers used 2000 pickup when he left area in 2015, it let me have truck to use and not put miles on the newer 1.

Heard on the news GM is shutting down their truck plant for 2 weeks because all of a sudden they have too many pickups. Probably can't sell as many $60,000 to $100,000 trucks. Don't see that many trucks on dealers lots just thinking dealers don't want or can't have that much high priced inventory sitting around.

To me the real shock is that there are people lined up to pay today's crazy prices for everything, like money is burning a hole in their pockets. I'm glad that what I have for vehicles even though the newest one is over 30 years old, they have been well taken care of and they all will outlast me. For other things, there are some projects I wanted to do, but don't NEED to be done. When driving, I drive easy to try to get good fuel economy instead of like video game driving like almost everyone else seems to be doing. I watch fuel prices and only get the bare minimum when they rise and get extra when they go lower. A tank of gas in the car will last me a couple weeks and I only use the trucks when I need to mover something. My grandparents were a big influence in my life and as they all lived through the depression without loosing everything. They knew how to work with what they had without needing to have the latest and fanciest. Who needs back up cameras, heated seats, keyless doors and more crap to quit working.

I just looked up on the FORD site and you can buy a BASE LINE F150 XL with an 8 ft bed and 4 wheel drive for $35,000.   ........ buy like Paul said, thats not what sells... People look for FULLY LOADED trucks and that add $40,000. worth of "EXTRAS".

Even $35,000 for a 1/2 ton grocery getter is a foolish waste of money, but like I said people cant spend their money fast enough. Then when the sheriff shows up with an eviction notice, they can't understand why it's happing to them.
New car dealers have been doing the "hard sell" on fully loaded vehicles forever, because the salesman's commission is greater. We were lucky to have a dealer years ago that would order vehicles with what was needed, without all the frills. They knew that the profit was in the sale because it never had to sit on the lot and they never had to make a partial payment on an unsold vehicle.

Well, the fact that a tank of gas lasts you 2 weeks and a tank lasts me a week says that in general I drive twice as much as you. Extrapolate another level and that means a 15 year old vehicle for me is about like your 30.   My daily driver now is a 22 year old truck, which of COURSE has a computer, those go back a ways. Add another tank of gas for the wife. And 45 hours plus driving for the day job, farm 400 acres, burn wood…. I don’t have TIME to work on vehicles, don’t have a spare to drive if I started a project much beyond routine maintenance. Another 2 cars in use are 13 years old and lots of miles. I don’t expect a single one of them to outlast me!!! So, going to have to part with some of that money burning in my pocket. Even if I could keep them mechanically running, salt cancer will have them consumed before too much longer.

We ain’t all the same. I don’t know what I’m going to get, probably next year. Hopefully stay less than $35k. If you think of it as lasting 10 years, $3500 per year, it’s not so bad.

You can buy a base line F150 for $32K and a 4 wheel drive for $35K .... you get a 200 cid engine, 10 speed auto, air cond, AM-FM radio , manual  door locks / windows ... and it has a 3 year/ 36K mile warrenty on everything and 60K on the power train... Thats not a bad plan if you do a LOT of driving.

Nephew just got new F350, waited 10 months, his old one it a Lariat, 2017, pretty much every option, 98000 miles asking $57600.  I think they will get it, it is clean and people don't want to wait 10 months for a new one that will be $88,000

Not so sure want a Dodge.  Been Several of these 'Super Stiff Frames' break in half, just behind the cab.  All reports were overloaded yet do not ever note the weight or the positioning of that weight as to direct cause.  Be watchful on those for stress markers at weaker points of angle transition.  Seen several of these broken locally while pulling same loads been pulling with their older trucks for years, Rails Sheared, not so much ongoing crack, but catastrophic instantaneous fail.
Then are the F150 rot away fails, where the manufacturer thought to be cutting a fat hog, lightened rails drastically then boxed the rails where crud could collect.  Rot away in our region at around 4-6 years, and most less than 100,000miles.  Last one saw had 73500 on odometer, 2017 year.

Trucks are crazy right now when I traded my 2017 F250 they gave me less than a $1000 difference than what I paid for it  I traded for a loaded F150 because we are downsizing as we age and they were asking $4000 more than sticker price and sold within a week,
