Can it be done without pulling the motor? just how much work is involved?

You can do it by pulling enough stuff out of the front so you can get a puller on the front pulley and get it off. I know the service manual for my 7000 says you need to pull the whole front end away, but with some creative engineering, I did it without even loosening the radiator, but it was a tight squeeze. Make sure you use the threaded holes in the pulley and don't grab it by the edges, as that will break the pulley. I'm undecided if it would be easier to do it with the front cover on or to pull the front cover. I have only done it with the front cover in place. If you give yourself enough room up front, I suppose you could do the old screw in the seal and pry the seal out trick. However, when you pull the timing gear cover, you can just lay it on 2 boards and knock the seal out from the back, all while being able to check that most of the adaptor plate bolts are tight under the cover. I'm not sure whether or not you'd have to pull the radiator or the whole front end, so I can't tell you for sure how much work it would take, but it's definitely close to the same amount of work it would take to split the tractor if you do have to do the above. Hope this is of some help. To answer your first question, can be done without pulling the engine, but you may or may not need to pull the front end.
