I have a 1955 wd45 that I am finishing the restoration of. The engine has been rebuilt with valve job, carb rebuilt, and new plugs, rotor, cap, points, condensor and wires. Since finishing the engine I have had it running several times and it has always started easily, if it didn't start in two seconds the key or gas was off. I then rebuilt the carb which I soaked in laquer thinner for 24 hours and cleaned and blew out all passages. The tractor ran great after that for at least an hour of running time. Two days later I decided to put in the new cap, rotor, condenser, points, plugs and wires. After this it started up and ran great as it had in the past I reset the timing with a light and then let it run for about 15 min. While it was running I decided to fine adjust the carb because I had a small misfire when I quickly throtted it up and just to get it dialed in right. While I was adjusting the power needle it died and I can't get it started for more than a few seconds. I reset the carb adjustments to starting point one to one and a half turns out and all I get are sputters and backfires with it every once and a while catching for a few seconds. I opened up the carb and found nothing but cleaned it again. I have full flow to the carb but still have the same problem. At this point I think it must be the ignition, a bad condensor or points or I have some how gotten out of time. I checked the distributor which I put an index mark on and it has not moved. I checked the firing order 1243 and I put in new plugs. It must be the condensor or points. Any help would be appreciated.

I had a new set of points go bad on are combine. The spark was jumping from the pivot point of the points to the bottom of the distribitor. Could only see what was happening by having someone turn it over with the starter and watch what was going on.

I was told by and old, old time mechanic that condensers usually dont got bad, you buy a bad condenser.  Looks like he was right!!!!!!

I have only seen 2 condensers go bad in my lifetime. One was on a Mallory YL dual point distributor I had in my old Maverick. The other was on a Kohler K321 engine in a Cub Cadet. Only the Mallory condenser actually failed. The wire broke off the Kohler. When I went to get new points and condenser for that Mallory dist I ended up with a Unilite conversion. The old 351W had never ran so good before that.

Sure is a pleasant surprise isn't it KC? I've had very same happen to me on WD. Happens another way too.....
A month ago our water well went out. Pump wouldn't run. Few years ago same happened so I expected to have to put in a new starter again. Weekend..no body open..so I took a chance and put back on the OLD ONE! Pump took right of and been running ever since!
Wonders never cease!
Sounds like you got a nice WD now after all that work..makes you feel lots better now don't it? ....Congrats!
