My father in law inherited an Allis Chalmers grader from his father but has no clue what exactly it is. That hasn't been a problem till now, because it needs a generator and a carb rebuild. It appears that the ID plate is gone so are there any other casting numbers or VIN locations to help determine the year and model? Thanks.

Since it has a mag instead of a distributor it is probably an older machine with the 201 cu. in. engine and a 6 volt electrical system. Should be a metal tag on the frame next to where you step onto the machine on the right side. The serial number will tell the year of the machine. There are people on this site that have information on serial numbers and year of fabrication. There are suppliers on this site that can supply carb kits. I use to own a D grader that was slightly newer and had a distributor and coil and I switched it over to 12 V and replaced the 6 V generator with a 12 V alternator. Because I had a coil I had to switch the coil to 12 V. ------------- Jack of all trades, master of none |

Thank you all very much for the help. I was expecting an email notification if anyone replied to this thread and one never came so I assumed I'd hit a brick wall. I logged in to do more searching and found several responses. Thank you.
Apparently the "metal tag" that has all the important information regarding the machine is missing. No clue why someone would remove that, but its gone. Is there another location where the serial number would/could be located? If we can just find that number I think it will give us any and all information we would need.

The D grader first started in 1949. I would say yours is mid 50's. The one that I had was a 1959 and had the D17 farm tractor engine which was 226 cu.in. and had a coil and distributor. Yours would have the WD farm tractor engine with 201 cu.in. and a magnito otherwise the remainder of your grader and mine were almost identical except that mine had a cab and was painted orange. One thing that I would check is the rubber boot on the shift lever. If it is damaged or missing it will let rain water into the transmission. I replaced mine with the rubber boot from the CV joint from a front wheel drive car. These are simple machines but require a moderate mechanical ability to work on them. ------------- Jack of all trades, master of none |
