I have an 1982 6080 that used to shift easily but now is a bit stiffer to shift and if it gets in a bind like when driving through sand or pushing a bale fork into a group a round hay I can't get it out of gear on the gear shift and the range shifter. I tried backing off the clutch a little but that had no effect. Any ideas why this happens and how to fix it.

If it is only a problem getting out of gear, shut off the engine and if it then comes out of gear more easily, it is the clutch dragging.

I have stuck a WD 40 straw into the top of the shifter boots and sprayed lube on the shifter mechanisum- helped a bunch on mine

It will not come out whether the engine is on or off. I have to move the tractor forward until I can pull the transmission lever out of gear.

Check the clutch cable that actuates it. A friend of mine had a similar issue. The clutch cable had stretched enough that it would not take enough pressure off of gears to shift easily. Worth a shot. Hope this helps.
