I am working on one of my WF's.  I'm starting to reassemble, and I have some questions.

Is there supposed to be a seal around the driveshaft between the transmission and rear end (between the two pictures below)?

My other question is about the bearing in the final drive (picture below). How tight should the nut be, that holds the bearing? I have read that you should snug it so there is resistance to turn it, then back it off to the next notch and another place it said to snug it so there is resistance to preload the bearing, Which is right?

I think there is suppose to be a sheet metal cap with slotted holes at a angle that captures a cork gasket.   As for bearings new ones a preload is good, used bearings tighten till resistance then back off one flat, at least thats what I do.

As for the cork gasket, it is no longer available and as far as i know no one has reproduced one. i would like to hear what others has been using here. Possibly Mr. Pfouts has a reproduction available?

Did you guys use an O ring where the transmission goes into the differential or on the end of the axle?

When I look in the parts book, they list a packing to go in the differential, but I'm not sure if that is around the driveshaft inside the differential or if it goes where they fit together. I am wondering what goes in there (between the top two pictures), if anything?

you can barely see the o-ring down in the bottom of the transmission case snout
has a bit of red RTV holding it in place

The retaining ring, which attaches to the 2 pins on either side originally held in a dense felt seal.  We have these felt seals available.  If you would like to order one, give me a call - 330.569.7037 - Mark
