Our 180 diesel has started making a clicking noise when the key is turned on. This continues when the tractor is started and running. It sounds like it is coming from the fuel tank area. Is this something to do with the fuel pump or something else? How can it be remedied? Thanks, Dave

Voltage regulator under the instrument panel hood.

Thanks for the info. We did have the hood off a few months ago to clean out a mouse nest and mess. Must be some damage left over from the damn mice!

Checked and the ground wire was securely connected. So, bought and installed a new voltage regulator. Now, when the key is turned on, the voltage regulator makes a buzzing noise. I believe we connected all of the wires correctly, but don't know why it is buzzing. It still does this when the tractor is running. Also, what exactly does the voltage regulator do, as it appears the system is charging when the tractor is running. Thanks, Dave

Regulator needs to be correctly hooked up.

F terminal on regulator goes down to alternator F terminal. Check field wire for possible ground or open/short or poor connection from some previous circumstance.

Terminal 2 of regulator goes to a connector under the dash that goes to the B terminal on key switch. from same connector that will lead up to the fuse that is used for temp, fuel gauge and oil pressure idiot light. check for poor connections or grounds on that wire.

This wire turns on and off the regulator's internal switch that supplies power to alternator F terminal.

Terminal 3 on regulator is connected to wire that runs through the wiring harness and eventually gets to the starter solenoid's 'B' battery terminal. That wire carries the amount of voltage to the regulator and the power to operate the charging system.

Regulator my have a slight hum, but if it is an electronic regulator (non mechanical internals) it should not hum at all. Regulator needs to have good ground, and hood needs good grounding.

To check if alternator is charging good, can disconnect harness at regulator and jump connections 1 and 3 on wiring harness connectors and should have something like 32 output amps.

May have alternator internal troubles... like brushes worn out or ...broken wire inside or short ...
