On a WD (and I assume at least WC as well), do you need to keep the main bearing caps that were original to the block, with that specific block? Or, can you swap main bearing caps from one block to another without any issues?

Would be best to keep original.. If you HAVE to change out, i would bolt the cap on empty and check for any LIP or overlap at the mating surfaces... You may have to mix and match to get a better FIT.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

If someone gives you a WC/WD block without main caps, it's too expensive to line-bore it even if you had main caps from another block. I'm just sayin......

Got it - avoid mixing caps and blocks if they didn't come together from the factory. Thanks guys.

I know I always keep the caps in the same location as they were.  Den

If you switch caps with another motor, it is POSSIBLE that the bore in the cap and the bock could be miss matched by .005 inch.. and you would have bearing interference with the crank when you install... of course it could be miss matched .001 and would probably work...... Thats why it is not a good idea to mix and match.. but if you dont have the original caps, you need to check the alignment of the two half bores and make sure the offset is very minimal.

exaggerated it could look like this...
