Has anyone repaired the splines by building up with wire welder and turning back and re-cutting the splines in a milling mach?  Will the axle become to hard to work?  Will it become brittle or stress crack?    Thanks,  Tim

I just stuffed in some aluminum shims,  OK so far.  I have heard that it is usually the hub, not the shaft that gets beat up.

I patched one once by grinding off the back side of the hub ( with a hand held grinder) so it would go on farther and added a washer on the outside behind the nut. Just depends how worn things are and I agree, the cast hub is probably worn more than the shaft.

Dr Allis, is the hub cast iron or a weldable malleable ?  Thanks,  Tim
