Looked at an old WC with a serial number that ends with an S, what does that mean? Standard version? or Special ?  Don't ever remember seeing one with the S at the end. Thanks

That it is, so would the 'S' signify that rear end?

The S stood for Steel.  The pre and post war WC had a cast rear end.  For a few years during the war they were made from steel and given that S designation.  Used to be worth a tick bit more than a run of the mill WC.
