D17 Series III

My battery stays up when I use my tractor.  The engine will start the next day.

If the big guy sits for a while, then the battery goes down.  I inserted my ammeter into the circuit and, yes, there is a small trickle.

Where would I reasonable start looking for this drain?

corrosion on the ammeter posts to mtg bracket ??
The original insulators were 'fibre'(aka paperish), collect moisture, become very weak 'resistors', since there's power to ammeter post 24/7, it'll slowly drain...

could be the generator / voltage regulator / starter / corrosion on a switch.....

You start somewhere like the regulator and take the BAT terminal off, then check for the leak... If thats not it, then take cable off the starter and check for the leak... etc... if you have ONE cable that feeds the lights , starter, etc.. you could pull it.

Looks like a BLUE wire from Battery cable to ammeter .... then red wire from there to regulator ...... If you take the red wire off you can test the generator and regulator..... there is another wire on the RED terminal of the ammeter.. If you take that wire off, it stops power to the ignition switch / lights so your testing that circuit.

Not that this post can solve your issue but on every one of my 23 Allis tractors I have a ‘cut out’ switch on the ground cable so the battery remains isolated when I’m not using them.

If your series 3 has been converted to alternator, I would be looking at the alternator/regulator circuit. The alternator would probably have a diode or two taken a dump. If still on generator, might be the windings in it due to oil or dirt.. or the regulator,  or the ign. switch/ light switch. Or some other oil/grease covered wire that the insulation has started to crack.
One time found the battery drain was a simple crack in the bottom of battery casing that leaked just enough acid to be wet and if the vehicle wasn't started for a couple days, it would drain the battery down. But chances of that being are very slim for that to happen, seen it twice in my life time.

Referring to the circuit diagram above...

Why is this showing positive ground?  I thought things were negative ground.

cars, trucks and tractors were all POSITIVE ground in the 1940- 50 era... Many were 6 volts.... about 1960 things started to change and systems were converted to NEGATIVE ground and 12 volts.... by the 1970s things had switched to ALTERNATORS instead of GENERATORS and the standard was 12v NEGATIVE GROUND.

What is yours ?  It was original POS GROUND... could have been changed over the years... not hard to do... and some had an ALTERNATOR installed in place of the Gennerator.

First thing. To check would be take battery cables off and let set a few days. Could be battery.                     MACK

Mack's advice is first....have seen batteries die just sitting and new doesn't mean a thing
