| Haul my old D 15 100 miles 2 or 3 times a year . Never put anything on the ball . Just wondering what you fellas do ? Thanks ! |

well, I don't ground via the hitch, but I still do not grease ball, as I noted long ago that despite all efforts, that grease on the ball collects dirt and becomes a grinding compound. ------------- I am still confident of this; I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Just laughing at this discussion! Have heard the same exact debate with the same exact sides here at work more than once! The ground circuit comment: reminds me of another pet topic of mine, and this time related, dielectric grease. Had a guy one time say, exact words: "I use dielectric grease on the hitch ball SO THAT I get a good ground!" Mmmkay!

| Have had ground wire connections fail, do not lose the lights but realize it as the trailer will ground thru the hitch and lights flicker on bumps. Simplest diagnosis out there. |

| WOW!! Maybe I should have explained myself a little better, I wouldn't put grease on a bumper pull for the simple fact if anyone can get a pants leg greasy it's me. I don't have any bumper pulls anymore everything I have including the camper have gooseneck hitches. I just get up there,wipe the ball off,give it a shot of dry lube and go on, been doing that for 50 some years, never have had an electrical issue, bottom line is I have this absolute fear of bare metal on bare metal. |

I've had a couple major negative experiences where the hitch coupler detached from the ball when I drove over uneven ground. I thought everything was solidly connected (especially the second time), but it wasn't. Mentioned this to my BIL and he said his father told him once to never forget to grease your ball. I think my problem was that the hitch and ball had so much rust that the coupler underjaw was not fully sliding and engaging under the ball. Since I started greasing my trailer ball (I just use petroleum jelly) I haven't had the problem. I also pull up hard on the trailer tongue to make sure it is solidly connected before proceeding. | Sorry, wasn't trying to cause trouble. I always pull my ball mount out of the receiver and put it under the seat , so don't want a greasy mess. Maybe a dry lube and a clean up before removal is the answer ? Thanks |

I carry a one pound tub of grease in the trucks and smear the 5th wheel plate or gooseneck ball each time the trailers are separated. Split tennis balls do a good job of covering the greasy hitch balls but just a blob on the ball to and a quick swipe around the perimeter is all that's needed.
