Sorry guys but I have this green question.  My friend is looking at a 2004 John Deere 457 silage baler.  4x5 net/twine mega wide pickup with 7077 bales.  Has anyone owned/used one or know of a neighbor.  What are the good and the bad.  What should he check out when he looks at it?  Any major failures?  He has a green one now and looking to upgrade.  Thanks and I will let you get back to the wonderful world of orange.

Make sure the baler has been shedded.
Bearings will last longer.
Check the condition of the sprockets and chains.
The tires can get very expensive, how much wear?
Are the knives sharp?
Metal fatigue / stress cracks.
Are there lots of weld repairs.
Rust or has the owner touched up the paint.
What condition are the belts and splices?
Check to see how much play in the gear box.
Are the safety shields and PTO shields in good condition?
PTO universal joints which are loose might be an indication of POOR maintenance.
Is the hitch worn badly? Has the hitch been repaired/replaced?
Check condition of the wiring,

For it's age that's extremely low bale count. Monitor could have been replaced; but maybe not. Get the serial# and have a Deere dealer run a history on it. You can also "Google" the S/N and a lot of times it will show it being in consignment auctions. It's amazing what you can learn if you take the time to research it. If you know the previous (Friend/Neighbor) and know everything is legit and looks good; then it should be a good baler. The 457 was a very good baler; but still find out all you can. I live in Ky. and I've seen balers for sale locally that were bought new hundreds of miles away and have been all over the country.
