Hello to everyone!
I'm new to the AC family, I've always been a red fan. I recently got a bargain on a WD, and a WD-45. I got the wd running today, but the hand clutch doesn't work. It was hung in 3rd gear ..... couple hours getting the forks lined back up. My question is this....The WD 45 also has a hand clutch (not running) and according to Tractor Data.com the 45 is suppost to be live pto. Was that an option or standard? Thanks in advance. Matt

It only has a live pto when the hand clutch is used.

Welcome to the Forum. The hand clutch was used on both the WD and WD45 to give you live pto. I believe it was standard equipment, never seen one without a hand clutch.

Thanks for the info... Also the wd has a tank and cap next to the radiator cap on the right side. Appears to be power steering. Were their wd's with factory power steering, or does it have the wrong decals?

Power steering wouldn't be til 1956 on the later WD45's. Check your serial # to see what you have, might be the wrong decal.

The Allis factory PS came out in 56 I believe but many WD's and early 45's had it added. Most WD's, all but the very late ones had a straight shifter lever and a spur gear transmission. When the switch came just before 45 production the tranny had a curved shifter with a constant mesh helical gears. The factory PS had the pump mounted high on the left side of the engine with the tank mounted on the right side of the hood about in line with the front 2 cylinders of the engine. The Factory PS unit was a big chunk of metal, compared to Char-Lynn types. The hand clutch is a transmission clutch and when disengage the PTO and hydraulics continue to work. The hand clutch is not ment for shifting but when you get used to the tractor and learn how to do it, it can be used if the wheels are stopped and you shift very quickly with no wasted time in neutral. not trying to start an argument but happen to no of a 1954 WD45 that came out of the factory with power steering, as I grew up around this tractor and owner who bought it almost new

The almost new might be the difference, original owner might have added it on? I'm no expert but I think most everyone is in agreement on the 1956 date.

I have a 1954 WD45 with factory PS too but it didn't come from the factory that way because PS was not an option until 1956. I'm sure there are hundreds of WD's and 45's that had it added later. Maybe since he bought it almost new, he bought it in 1956 or later and the PS had already been installed by the dealer.

Thanks gentlemen nice link. It has brought up some more questions though. Does the Hydraulic system, transmission, and final drives mix oil or is the Hyd. seperate from the trans and final drive? I would like to use 90w gear oil in the trans if they don't.... to reduce noise, and Hy-Tran or Hy--Guard in the Hyd system. Please excuse my ignorance but literally know nothing about allis chalmers. Never been around one till I bought these. thanks again

Finals are separate from everything else. I used Hytran in everything up top cause I read about some seal or whatever going bad and hy oil would get in the tranny. My 45 has been that way for most of the 27 years I have owed it. Many people use gear lube in the tranny and diff.
