My  ole B  is being ornery, it won't shut off with the on / off switch , i have to choke it off. won't start with the switch in but starts when pulled out.  then won't shut down when pushed in again .  i have a spare switch and it does the same thing.  now what to fix that ?  could it be both switches, one is brand new .  Thanks

If you have a distributor, the switch is used to CUT OFF THE POWER to the ignition coil... You can check that the switch is doing that...

If you have a MAGNETO ... the switch is connected to a wire that is on the terminal on the side of the mag... What the switch does is short the wire ( connect) to GROUND and kill the spark...

If your WIRE to the switch is good.......... then YES, your switch is the problem.

you can test the system by using a house light switch or toggle switch and connecting it temporary.......... or just take the two wires off the switch and PINCH them together or apart while wearing a glove.

Have you installed an Alternator along with a 12 volt battery ?

it is an alternator gm 1 wire,  the house switch doesn't  work either.I did find i think  on the alternator wiring  there are 2 wires  labeled r 1 and f 2  , i think i have them reversed ,  r 1 is going to the the terminal labeled bat on the alternator f 2 is going to the  the ign switch, it starts and runs this way.  does it make any difference  ?  should i reverse them and see.  it seems to run and charge fine, just won't shut off with  the switch .

Yes, it makes a difference.. If you dont shut off the signal to the alternator, it can back feed to the coil and keep firing.. you also need a resistor / diode or idiot light in the #1 line.. i guess you have a distributor ignition ?
