| Does anyone have a home remedy to stop mice from chewing on radiator hoses? They have started to chew on the edges of the hoses on our L-2 combine. We use moth balls, rat poison, and even bars of Irish Spring soap to keep them out, but they can't resist the smell of antifreeze. |

put a small bucket about 1/2 full of used antifreeze mix around the engine compartment and leave it for 1-2 weeks. You will find them floating in the bucket. Around here I drain all the old antifreeze into a bucket (to keep it off shop floor) and before I have a chance to dispose of it in a couple of days there are always mice floating in it. Don't put it were pets/children can get into it though.

To second what just been said, cats especially go mad for anti freeze, and it don't do 'em any good, so be very careful where you put the bucket of fluid. I got a mouse chewing the battery terminal cover on my truck, and the little buggers have been at my wifes car, two washer bottles, AND the main wiring loom. I just put plenty of bait stations and traps around the wheels of the affected vehicles, and around the sheds, keep at it and you'll thin them out eventually. ------------- If it seems like a good idea, do it. It's easier to apologise than to get permission. |

An old tried and true home remedy was barn cats. Not very friendly, but you didn't have any mice problems neither!!

A pail with a lid smaller than the diameter of the pail, hang that lid with one piece of string , centered over pail, bait center of lid, when critters jump on lid to get to bait, lid tips sending them into bucket. A couple inches of anti-freeze in bucket gives them a soft landing and a chance for exercize and something to drink.
A couple of ramps up to the pail or container gives them access, can be set under things to keep kids and other larger animals out. Or cut holes into upper part of plastic bucket , use the pail lid to secure it and hang the inner tip lid from secure bucket top. Same contents and same results but keeps cats , dogs, and other larger things out. ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. It is a walk in the light. Try the newer antifreezes with bitterant SP? in it. The stuff is horrid. I was changing my wifes car's antifreeze and saw the label on it. Remembering being splashed a time or to and knowing how sweet it was, I touched a bit to my tongue. Several beers later, some milk and bread my mouth was still foul with the bitter taste. The make a spray, called bitter biter I think, should be at the pet store, for spraying wounds on pets so they don't chew on them. Spray the outside of the hoses down with that to prevent them from trying. |

I wonder if that "Bitter Biter" would work in cabs? Or would it smell too bad? The mice have just gotten terrible the last few years. Can't keep them out of stuff. I used B100 biodiesel for a few years until it got too expensive. Had a real problem with mice chewing the fuel lines, that and the fuel lines going soft from the biodiesel. ------------- "If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer" Allis Express participant |

Antifreeze will pretty much kill anything that drinks enough of it. |
