Hello all, I recently purchased a D17, 1958 or 1959 year with a spun rod bearing. I have measured the crank and it has +0.050" wear on it in the worst spots on that one journal. Obviously this crank will not be going back in as is.  What do i do?  It is a gasser.  Napa guy told me the crank was cast iron and it cannot be welded and remachined?? Is he right?? What are my options on this?  Anybody know any whereabouts of new/used cranks. Thanks.

option one is to find another crank, used one, reground one or a new aftermarket one,

option two is to have the crank welded and re ground.  Yes it can be welded, how do you think they make stroker cranks out of some of them?   It may not be real cost effective for you though, here it's $100 to weld a crankpin, and then the grinding cost is a bit higher than a standard grind, you could spend an easy $250 to get it done and then what size are the other journals?  Your crank may be cracked in that area and be junk anyway.

To begin with, I would question the knowledge of any machinest who can't tell the difference between a forging and a casting, yes it can be repaired, but D-17 cranks are not hard to come by, I would just get another crank.

When buying another make sure you get one with the same main sizes. Early 17s had a 45 crank in them.

The problem with reading MLPANKEYS posts, is that they dont make boots that tall.

Is that really true?

They all had the same crank, which is 3''. About the first D-17 made was in the Implement and Tractor test and it had the heavier crank when they were tested in Nebraska Univerity.

I have a D17 gas crank I'd sell for $100.00 in Wisconsin. 715-597-6717 or PM me. I can send pictures if you are interested. Kraig

Norm,
I thought all D-17s had center thrust bearings? At what point did they change?
Apparently, you were able to tell his has the front thrust by the fact that it is a '58 or '59?

Wow, Thank you all for your quick responses!! Looks as if this will be the place i come to when things go wrong.  I didnt think finding a replacement crankshaft would be so easy.  I was watching ebay, which i am starting to dislike more and more, for one and none really surfaced.  Some nice guy made me an offer i could not refuse.  We compared casting numbers and everything matched up.  Im no professional but i think it would be obvious when a person tried to install the two different cranks as to which one was proper.  It would be a bummer to buy an incorrect crank though.  I will keep my old one for a while, never know when it might come in handy.  One final question.  Some folks said they could be welded and ground, (keep in mind im no metal expert) so what material are these cranks made out of?? forged steel, cast iron?? Thanks.

I guess I didn't know there was a change either. I thought a 226 crank was a 226 crank, didn't matter year produced. So is the change based on when the 226 went from bypass type oil filtering to full flow?

ANy D17 crankshaft I have seen has the center main as the thrust bearing, while a WD45 is the front.  My father's 1958 D17 has the center thrust bearing and has the bypass oil system.  I believe the bearings in a D17 are larger than on a WD45, but am not certain on that.

According to my copy of my D17 parts manual, there is only one crank for the entire run of gas and LP engines in the D17. It shows assembly #234184 as a complete kit. Anybody have a WD45 parts manual?

The journals on a D17 crank are larger. I wanted to put a D17 crank in a WD45 block and it don't fit!

According to my WD-45 Parts book, there is one Crank kit (#230004) for the 45 and it has the trust bearing on the front main.
