About a week ago the Starter Motor on one of my Model G wouldn't crank at all.  After spending a lot of time eliminating the "usual suspects" of such behavior, I decided to remove the Starter to check out the brushes.

I got the Starter out without too much trouble.

Under the removable Starter Motor Cover was some dried, ancient "waxy tape".  It was 3/4-inch wide and there was about 4 feet of it wrapped around the starter.  I suppose this Starter has been worked on previously and the technician applied this tape to help keep dirt & dust out of the Starter's innards.

I replaced the brushes and cleaned the Commutator and tested the Starter.  That seemed to do the trick as the Starter now works properly.  Although I'm pretty confident that the "waxy tape" is not original to the Starter, it doesn't seem like a bad idea to wrap some modern equivalent around the Starter similar to the way I found it.

1.  Is this a bad idea?

2.  What would this "tape" be called?

Thanks for any advice on this subject.

Scott
