Noticed chirping sounds coming from my 200 alternator whenever I exit the fully air conditioned cab while baling hay. Also while baling the ammeter gauge dances up and down like never before. Like up to 30 and back to 3, never steady like it used to. Would there be another contact for the air conditioning compressor to examine before I just replace the alternator? Also most replacement alternators online are 35 amps with the tach drive on their backs. Should I have a larger amp alternator with my air conditioner? I never use any lights or other draws but live with the ac! Thanks. DANA

OK, simple test...

Turn OFF the airconditioning and listen/see what happens...

If it's 'normal operating' when OFF, then I suspect the A/C compressor is causing the chirp and amps jumping

If the compressor is mechanically binding, the chirp could be the belt moving against the 'stalled' A/C pulley. The 30 amps...3 amps could be that or the compressor trying to 'cycle' on-off based on some switch(pressure ??) that says 'cool /don't cool'.

I ain't no A/C expert but if it's on max cool/plugged rad/hot out...something in the A/C system can cause problems....maybe low on freon, loose belt, ???

like Jay says, a slipping belt can cause the CHIRP a lot of times... I use a weed sprayer and shoot a shot of water at the belt while running.. If the chirp changes or goes away momentarily, you know its the belt... Shutting off the compressor also decreases the load, and that MIGHT make the chirp go way..... Belt can be loose, or badly worn.

Why the amp meter jumps could also be the belt slipping and alternator speed dropping ON- OFF ....

Chirping can also be a dry bearing in the alternator starting to fail... But that noise is normally more CONSTANT than a chirp.

Could be that the bearings in the alternator are going bad. Combined with fluctuating voltage, I would go ahead and get it rebuilt.

So I just did another test are on outside the shop in regards o the 200 alternator issue. With the air conditioner on low and full cold the amateur jumps like one of those kangaroo mice you see out in the hayfield. To my surprise when I flip the switch over to high ( I have never ever used high as low freezes me out) there’s no jumping just a solid 10 to 15 amp draw no jumping. With the blower/ac off all is normal both in low and high (which I never ever use cause I bale hay on hot days ) staying steady at around 1 or 2 amps. As for the chirping I heard none, why I have no idea! So whatever all of this means this is where we are at with the mighty 200. Thanks y’all for listening! Cap’n Dana

My 220 will do the jumping thing at first start. Always blamed it on old school Voltage regulater
