I got a used Trinco media cabinet with a bunch of accessories. I didn't like the syphon tube setup and its gun needed more cfm than my little 2 stage IR could handle. I swapped in a couple smaller cfm guns, but the syphon had little draw vs amount of air I was blowing through the gun. I tried the diy syphon tube that came with the cabinet. It worked great! The former owner used a 1/2" copper pipe bent into a big u shape and drilled a tiny hole at the bottom of the u to pick up media. One end of the u has hose to media gun and the other end is open sticking up at mesh floor level. The copper is at least 6' long. I guess it gets higher air velocity with the longer length to draw in media better. I had to reduce air pressure at gun b/c it surged. This was using fine aluminum oxide. |

Thats odd........ my tube is also 1/2 inch copper .... it is about 2 ft long and points down to the bottom of the media hopper.. can only suck media, there is no "open" or "hole" for air ti enter... Then i have a 3 ft rubber hose that slides over the copper and the other end of hose goes to the gun ........... Never thought of having an "open" on the suction end for additional air ?? ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

I was suprised it worked, let alone very well. I bought 1/2" black pipe and was about to make my own pickup tube assembly - conventional style. |

Thanks for the ideas guys... I have a cabinet i made out of 1/2 inch plywood 30 years ago. Has a "suction tube" like shown on the FACTORY HARBOR FREIGHT design... I never thought of this "mod" to get more air to PICKUP the media... Like the guy in the movie says.. | A side note with media cabinets, to save on etching the work window, I take out the glass and put a layer of seran wrap covering the glass facing inside the cabinet then reinstall it. When you cant see through it anymore try wiping dust off seran wrap or replace wrap. I often use glass cleaner to clean the covered side before I apply the seran wrap as it makes it stick better. Cheaper than replacing glass after its etched. |

Too windy to spray outside today so i worked in the shop. Decided to modify the suction line on the media blaster... THANKS ANDY !! ....I have been struggling with suction problems for 40 years... Your post got me on the right track. I had a 1 inch TEE and 6 inch nipple and plug in stock so decided "that was the size". Cut the nipple in half to go out of the hopper to TEE, then out of the TEE toward the gun.. Welded a 3/8 NPT fitting on the outlet so i could install the "bleeder valve".. I thought i would try the male part of an air coupling instead of an adjustable valve.. I had a 1/4 inch coupling ( 3/16 dia hole) and a 3/8 coupling ( 1/4 inch hole) for tests.. The smaller 3/16 did great.. I made a "hose nipple" from a Heavy 1/2 inch pipe. It had about .400 inch hole in it and i turned one end down to 5/8 inch for the HOSE to fit.. Other end i left ( almost an inch dia) and slid it into the 1 inch pipe 1/8 inch and socket welded them together... My gun takes a 5/8 hose ... I had an old rubber 5/8 garden hose is i used that to run from the new SUCTION to the gun....The EXTRA air thru the 3/16 nipple hole really pulls the media( i use black beauty) up thru the gun..   ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |
