I have a series 2 D17. I purchased 4 years ago and purchased an overhaul kit and did the rod bearings, cam bearings, sleeves and pistons (it smoked like a chimney). i took the word of the guy (mistake) I got it from and did not do the valves and valve guides since he said they were OK.
I have used it to haul Grandkids and clear snow for myself and neighbors with no oil useage and it has ran fine on these small tasks. This summer I purchased a rotary mower to use to mow my sons old non used pasture. It runs great with good govenor response and power. The problem is it is using about 2 quarts of oil/day. It is the first time since the overhaul that it has carried a constant 180 temperature under a load of any kind. It DOES NOT SMOKE OR HAVE ANY BLOWBY AT ALL. Is it valve guides or did I screw up on something or are the rings having trouble seating after light use. Dad always waited after an overhaul and plowed with the wd45 for first yask. Since i don't farm i couldn't do that. I'm Stumped and need help. Again it seems to run great.

If no blue smoke out the exhaust and no blowby would guess the rings and valves are still good. Would suspect a leaking crankshaft seal, bad valve cover gasket, bad head gasket, or frost plug in the head. Check for oil leakage at the front and rear of the engine (oil leakage should be visible when leaking 2 qts/day) and oil in the radiator. If you find oil in the radiator, pull the valve cover and check out the frost plugs in the head 1st.

Thanks Greg. I can't find an oil leak anywhere. None front, back, bottom or top. Radiator is not showing oil. At that rate I think it would be running over.

Rear main seals like to sling oil when running warm. Won't see it idling or parked.

Pull the flywheel inspection cover from the "bell housing" portion of the torque tube (under the flywheel) and look there with a flash light.

The rear seal is shot on my D17, it leaks a bit all the time, but when running the brush hog, snowblower, or that )%%)*&&^WE^#( auger, it seems to really leak bad. Anything off the PTO seems to make it leak. Dunno why. Someday I'll fix it. Meanwhile, BP needs the money.

Its over at my sons. I won't see it until this weekend. Wouldnt it leak out the hole in the bell housing ?? I don't remember an inspection plate and there is no oil coming out the hole. I'll check it out. I put in a new rear engine seal and one on in the front of the tranny when I had it apart.. that don't mean I didn't screw it up. But it did not lose or use oil until the mowing job. Jim

Also go around the pan and snug up the bolts.
