Iv'e got a noise & vibration in the platform on my D-14. First noticed a couple yrs. ago during a tractor ride. Seems to be brought on by road speed. Faster you go, the worse it gets. You feel it in your feet & feel& hear it in the rt. fender. Mostly in the rt. side. I jacked it up & the wheel bearing feels fine. Removed a shim from rt bull pinion bearing thinking it was loose but no help there. Drained and replaced final drive pans , no difference. A friend tells me it's too much slack in the rear end says needs to have some shims removed???  Any brake application makes no difference at all. Thanks for any ideas, keith so. va.

I'll bet it's tire tread bar rumble, not any bearing problem.

D-14s weren't designed for 'highway speeds', agree tire lugs....NOT 'mechanical'.
But... if your friend is dang sure, let HIM 'reshim' the diff, YOU set in easy chair and watch.....Big smile

I don't think it's tread bar rumble since I had the tractor for about 5yrs. Just started a couple yrs. ago & Iv'e been trying to ignore it [not working] !! Just getting worse! Won't do the spring tractor ride like this. Happens on the gravel driveway too. As far as tread bar rumble not much lugs left , the tires need replacing. Would too much clearance in ring & pinion cause this ???   JB if 14's weren't designed for highway speeds, why did AC put 4-speed trans???

just to give you the gears....LOL
I very,very seldom get into 4 high....
my noise was from the bull gear bearing,new race and oil sure helped.

D-15's are somewhat known for a noisy ring & pinion gear set in road gear. D-14's could also be that way, as they are the same design. A noisy R & P is not a real reason to rip one apart looking for something that is somewhat normal for that model. Have you walked up to the tractor and grabbed the top of each rear tire and violently pushed and pulled on it sideways to feel for any looseness in the axle bearings?? If they are loose, you can "feel" it when testing like this.

Yes  I have grabbed & shook each wheel, on the ground & jacked up, no play. Thinking back a year &a half ago I hauled 4 round bales on a trailer from a friends place bout a mile away. I remember the noise being worse when loaded, so bad I remember shifting the PD back to low , still same noise but not near as bad. I had that situation while trucking many years ago. The truck barely made a low growl turning in to terminal, but after loading a front wheel seized up after 5 miles! Sounding more like final drive bull pinion bearings. keith so. va.

Typical ring & pinion noise is climbing the hill and at the peak of the hill gets quieter and down the hill very much quieter.
