Quick question, gents. Is there any rhyme or reason to the A-C engine designations in later years... let's say early '70s.

On the smaller engines, you see four digit model numbers, such as for the legendary 3500.

On the bigger stuff, you see five digits, such as the 11000, 25000 or 65000.

Do these model numbers break down in any useful way?

I don't know the why AC used the nomenclature "Series" in identifying most of their engines.
The 11000 was the 516 cid engine with a turbo and 10000 was the same 516 cid but with out the turbo. The next ones were the 844 cid engines starting with the 16000 witch was naturally aspirated, 17000 had the small turbo, 21000 had the big turbo and finally the 25000 had the big turbo and the intercooler. All of the 844 cid engines used the same cylinder block but used slightly different parts due to the horsepower upgrades as you go higher in the series numbers.

2000 series had a 2200 (4 cyl gas and deezel) 2400 (4 cyl turbo deezel) 2500 (6 cyl gas) 2800 (6 cyl gas and deezel) 2900 (turbo deezel) and 2950 (turbo intercooled deezel).  3000 series were all deezel with 3400 (no turbo) 3500 (turbo) 3700 (turbo intercooled) 3750 (turbo intercooled counterbalanced crankshaft.  Just the "model" alone doesn't indicate what configuration it is. That gets down to the catalog number of which I don't think anyone has the book on those numbers.

the 6000 originated in the HD6, 11000 in the HD11, 16000 in the HD16. There was some rhyme or reason lol!
