Drove past a 15 acre lot in an industrial area that "normally" has travel trailers in it, but had at LEAST 2,5000 Ford trucks in it ConfusedOuch ?? They were F150  "grocery-getters" ( NO 8' beds/Super Duty's) of varying cab door configurations Wink . Why were they there and not on an empty dealers lot ???

If they were all the same color, my guess would be it is a ‘fleet order’, waiting for computer chips?

Have you gotten to the part where his first few companies go bankrupt when creditors demand full payment for goods delivered? Next he learns to make a go of things by stiffing companies claiming poor quality of goods delivered. Then later he goes back on his word to pay royalties for use of a patent.

15 acres is a drop in the bucket, here in Lansing, GM has hundreds of acres of SUVs waiting for chips, every abandoned GM site in the area (of which GM claims to have no interest of ownership or responsibility for clean up)  is parked bumper to bumper and door handle to door handle with them.

You'd think after at least 2 USA administrations saying they'll lesson our overseas dependence and 3 years of semi-conductor shortages from across the seas plants that someone would build a computer chip plant in North America.
I know it's small but last time in Council Bluffs, IA was several blocks of vehicles setting all fenced in.
Oh wait, they'd not be paying a couple dollars a day for 10-12 hour work days.

In 1914, Henry Ford did a surprising thing by increasing the wages of his employees. He gave $10,000,000 in profits to his employees. He raised the wage of his factory workers from $2.34 a day to $5.00 a day.11 Ford also made his work days only 8 hours. This was unheard of during this time as many workers worked longer than 8 hours and made a lot less. This led to lines outside of Ford’s factory as people from all over were trying to obtain a job.

Ford’s idea for increasing the wage of his workers was successful . He was trying to seek out more long-term employees so he would have a more professional and dedicated workforce. Since he raised the wage he had some of the best production numbers ever heard of. His productivity also rose between 40%-70% and his profits rose about 20% within a year of announcing the pay increase.13 His crews were more focused and wanted to work for him. He was setting the foundation for the idea of our modern “living wage.”

So ,have to ask, WHAT 'computer chips' are they short of ?
The ones in the ECU ( the brains that RUNS the vehicles)  ? OR the puter that runs the infocenter krap ??

If the ECU..then HOW do they get them off the line and onto trailers into the lots ??

Jay, as you know there are HUNDREDS of "chips" per truck... Only ONE Engine Control Module, Transmission control Module ( maybe several chips on each ?)..... Dozens of smaller units to control  heat / windows / seat position / seat temp / radio/ GPS/ clock.... etc............ I dont know, but i would assume there is a "standard" chip that is used in 30 - 50 different applications on EACH truck ... ?? ......... X 30 ?... X 50 ?

another way to look at it is to assume you have a given amount of WIRE to build a truck.. You connect the ignition system and SKIP the lights / horn/ radio/ electric windows, etc...not the same, but basic idea........... of course the "CHIP BOARD" can be easily installed at a later date on the new truck.

Been told there are 47 Separate Chips to make a Modern Pickup operate at all functions.  Large Semi Trucks are close to 70.  Right now the Modules required to keep One Truck on the highway operational are back ordered for replacements where a Six Week lead time has evolved, HOWEVER, should a Newer machine needing that same component come in for Warranty that machine receives the part and the older Customer NON Warranted part clock is reset to ANOTHER Six Weeks.

Can-Bus operating systems have taken over as a NECESSITY for automotive producers, can be determined as "Proprietary Diagnostics Programming" where ONLY a dealer may repair them.  One wire may carry upward of 5 signals at varied signature to run a Fan or change a Duct director, or to change radio stations or even to Dim the headlamps.

Your description of the back-ordering process is spot on, Dave.
Back in 1999, when I bought my Isuzu Cabover, I paid cash, got it from Dovell and Williams, in Glen Burnie.  Only serious problem I ever had with it was an injector that went at about 4k miles.  I went to the service department, was told the news, I would be put on a waiting list for a new injector. I asked the service guy, you sellin a lot of these NPR's, now?  He says yep, so many that alla the injectors produced are going into the production line.  I said to him How many are in the port of Baltimore, right now he says over a hundred.  He didn't get the hint, so I says Now I'm just an old country boy, born and raised on Allis Chalmers gas tractors.  You know what the beauty of an AC gas tractor is?  He says no.  I says, if you had a distributor cap or rotor or other part went bad, in plowin season, you could loosen up a clamp, and yank the dizzy right out, and swap it offa another tractor on the farm, and finish your work.  An uncomfortable sorta silence filled the room, as the service guy didn't have much to say...  This silence was ended by a shout from one of the little offices in the back of the place, saying Go up to the port and yank an injector off of a truck, and let this man go back to work!  That was Mr Williams, doing the shouting!Wink

I guess those days are long over, but is a good look at what was right, back then, that's wrong right now.

A 1 ton ford at that time was about the same price, but I got twice the truck that a ford is. Now I am not saying that I can beat a f-350 off the line, but I could make fewer trips, and also out turn him!WinkWink

Well, I’ve never been a mopar man but it’s all I could get right now. They really had a cheap deal, because they were trying to get rid of it. It's a limited edition pickup so I just ordered it and see what happens. It kinda looks stupid but what I can’t figure out when they delivered it yesterday I found out it doesn’t have a steering wheel.

Customers are getting a little chippy, waiting for these trucks.
This is causing a dip in the market.
Perhaps the chip manufactures will gear up production this spring.

calling Henry Ford an ‘early’ Hitler, is a bit much, imho. Ford Motor Co., like article cited had some of the industry’s best wages, and benefits years before the UAW. To a degree I can get understand HF’s resentment towards unions, and union organizers.

I get really TIRE over these ongoing discussion. Maybe if we would TRANSMISSION our thoughts to those in charge they would put on the BRAKES and SWITCH to a different design. If they would DASH in a different direction, maybe we could all SEAT a little better.

Maybe there is a DIFFERENTIAL way of doing things ? ... or at least a BATTERY way ?

A friend just bought a new 2016 Volkswagen with less then 100 miles on it. He had one when they were recalled for the pollution problem and he loved that SUV, but he took the buyout at the time because it was a pretty good deal. They got a Lexus SUV  that he never did like as well. He was talking with a person who has a Volkswagen and found out they fixed the problem and sold them at auction, Any way some used car dealers were able to load up on them, He found one that had 8 left in stock, dealer said he had sold a bunch of them. Just wondering when they get chips for these vehicles if they will have a bunch of new 2 or 3 year old vehicles to sell?

Yes Steve it apparently can be activated later. There was a $50 Credit for the Park Assist non-function. Apparently all the Sensors and wiring etc. is in place, just needs the appropriate Chip.
Sales Invoice says it will be installed Free of Charge when it becomes available.
