About to buy a boat with what is, as best I can tell, an AC 21000 MK2. I've exhausted my knowledge and ability to internet search, hoping others here can help with a few questions. This will be my first diesel, but I'm not a stranger to mechanical, engines, or hard work. Are fuel, oil filters still available, or would it be smarter to install some modern bypass/ housing to accept available filters? I have no idea if it was ever rebuilt, what is the average life of one of these? Hopefully, after some cleaning and maintenance, I can get a few more thousand hours. Any concerns or thoughts I should look into? The engine does currently run, but apparently is hard starting? I have not examined in person yet. Thanks! |

JayYoung, welcome to the AC forum. Congrats on owning an AC diesel. The 21000 MKII is a big ole' boy. Weighs in as a base engine @ 3520lbs. It is designated as 6138T(6 cylinder, 13.8L Turboed) & it is in the late1960s-1970s 844 cu in engine family (5.25"bore x 6.5" stroke) which includes the following models: 16000, 16000T, 16000H all naturally aspirated, 17000 lightly turboed, 21000 turboed, 25000 turboed intercooled. Depending on it's application, the 21000's hp can vary ~ usually 3 different settings 340-375hpGross@2100rpms(full load). Full load is recommended in Variable loads. Don't exceed 2 hours at full load rpms without including variable lower adjusted rpm loads. A 24 hr fully loaded engine is recommended max @ 1800 280hpGross/265hpNet. At 340hpGross, torque is 984ft/lbs@1400 rpms, .345lbs fuel consumed BHP@1650rpms, At 360hpGross, torque is 1042ft/lbs@1400 rpms, .345lbs fuel consumed BHP@1650rpms, At 375hpGross, torque is 1050ft/lbs@1400 rpms, .349lbs fuel consumed BHP@1650rpms, Compare it's Allis-Chalmers (AGCO) filter's part numbers to other online filters (Napa, Balwin, etc) and you should be able to find all of them. Longevity? Read/study its Owners Manual per it's application's LOAD(S), duration of LOADS, RPMs recommendations per LOADS, AND SERVICE INTERVALS. Try not to allow it "low idle" for lengthy intervals. If lengthy low idle is required, try to set at 900 rpms to ensure that it's crank/rod journals stay fully lubed. In the boat this AC 21000 is installed, is it a small tugboat, river ferry boat, or modest fishing boat? |

filters are readily available will not be a problem i get from carquest for my 16000 engine cartrige style i believe is 85311 off top of my head ------------- Me -C,U,UC,WC,WD45,190XT,TL-12,145T,HD6G,HD16,HD20 Dad- WD, D17D, D19D, RT100A, 7020, 7080,7580, 2-8550's, 2-S77, HD15 |
