Howdy folks,,, hoping ya'll ain't getting tired of ole Joe yet as I do need some more help,,,, Since I really been using the D14 quite a lot lately,,,I NOW need to look into the carburator as it has been using a whole lot of gasoline for some time but I looked the other way since it only got used every so often,,,,, But is more noticeable NOW as I been using it every day for bout a week and got another week to go til job completion. Then yesterday, the engine started stumbling at higher RPM acting like it wanted to run outa fuel,,,so pulled choke a little and it ran better but not right . Since not working on weekends, I'm thinking on pulling the carb for a good cleaning but cannot remember what the correct settings are for the carb. Any ideas,,,???

Well Joe, the first thing I would check is how plugged up the air cleaner is, the high fuel use and running better with the chock on sure point to an lack of air problem. Good luck in any event! |

on adjustable jets, i normally screw them in till they bottom out... Then back out 1-1/2 turns . ......... most carburetors, that is a "good" point. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

I know ,this'll sound 'daft' but... turn off radio, hold float to ear and shake it. If you hear ANY 'sloshing' ,it has a pinhole in it..somewhere. Might not be your problem, but eliminates the float as being it. One of my D-14s had 'carb problems', so I checked the float,had a pinhole, fixed that, reassemble carb,test 'magically' ran better. If it's running smooth (on all four, evenly), probably not a bad plug or wire.something 'common' like the carb. for settings, lightly screw in til they stop, backoff 1 1/2 turns, I think. Step one clean the sediment bowl and reinstall. Next pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carburetor and turn on the gas. I let it run over my finger. I smell it on occasion to see if it smells weak/ watery of like food strong gas. It will also have a different feel if watered down. Make sure you have a blood constant flow. Try it again. If it still stumbles. Turn the power valve out a little. If that doesn’t do the trick it’s time to clean the carb. I chased a problem fir days on a D14. Would start and run perfect. Kick the brush hog in and go a ways then run out of gas. I cleaned the carb multiple times. Tried everything. Turned out to be an acorn in the gas tank. Wouldn’t shutoff the gas but cut flow enough it wouldn’t pull at high rpm. |

| ALWAYS start with the fuel supply source, the tanks sediment bowl outlet. Must flow at least one gallon in 15 minutes. |

| as rusty as a lot of these old tanks are, I've gone to putting in a one inch long copper stand-pipe up in top of the sediment bowl, with 4 holes drilled half an inch down. seems to help. |

Also an in line filter,easier to change out a dirty filter than clean a carb and I get plenty of small 'goodies' in the filters that the gas has passed thru a sediment bowl.
