Another one bites the dust ! Went through the part of the Constellation CVA 64 meeting the breakers a couple years back . humour me guys... just how much FUEL is that trip going to burn up ? can't believe someone ON the WEST coast couldn't find a use for it ? | Find a use for it??? A use, for a 280x1000 foot aircraft carrier?(guess you could stack a lot of containers on the flight deck) And.....do we want somebody to find a use for it? |

A lot of fish could hide inside if it was just sunk as habitat.  Some will think this is more useful than others.  I guess it depends on if tax payers are fueling it or the scrap company.

Since the DOD sold it for a penny, I think it was FOB, and the buyer pays the postage. I can only imagine how many tons of asbestos is in that ship. Probably enough copper in it to make it a profitable job. |

I used to work with a guy that moved off to California for a while. He fell on hard times and was near homeless. He said they had an old carrier docked that they used for a shelter. He went there got a shower, food and a place to sleep. People would show up early mornings looking to hire workers. He went to work the first morning and got hired permanent. |

the cost now to sink a ship is outrageous - all lead paint needs to be abated, all traces of oil and other such must be cleaned , asbestos abatement, removal of other things figured to be a hazard . It seems a environmental impact statement and the do gooders look at it as polluting the oceans . So for 1 cent the government passes all the problems to someone else . much of the steel ends up in Mexico as the closest point for shipping . | Not much beyond basic metals and wire once leaves Navy hands, usable anything for other ships is generally stripped even parts off tooling, fixtures, furnishings or engines or generators all those will be gone. |
