Can someone tell me what style muffler a 45 and 41 b had ? I have seen ubnderhood, upright with small pipe going through small hole in hood and upright with a flange on the side of the muffler and a big hole in hood for the big part of muffler.

The B came with both the underhood muffler and the above the hood muffler. I think it might have been a no cost option, I see about 50/50. I also know of tractors that haven't had them changed that have both that came that way from the factory.

Late 48 or 49 they changed over to the above the hood muffler

If I understand my parts book correctly.

Above hood mufflers are correct for B tractors numbered 114401 and up.

Underhood mufflers are correct from B tractor number 55301 to 114400.

Prior to B tractor number 55301 no muffler is correct. Short straightpipe.

Your restoration options are up to you. Lots of small hole hoods have been butchered to fit a above hood muffler thru them.

I will say that the above hood muffler doesn't put exhaust in your face like the short one does.

Brian, I'm glad you brought that up. Anybody ever use the flexible exhaust pipe like NAPA sells to route the underhood muffler's exhaust down and away from the driver? I had that idea recently, but I was just wondering if anyone has tried it. If so, got any pictures?

My C has the Stanley cheapo above-hood muffler that works OK, and my B has a Nelson under-hood muffler with a 2 ft extension. I find that the under-hood muffler with the extension is my favorite since it is very quiet and less troublesome than the Stanley which seems to always be loose in the manifold. Be aware that the Nelson under-hood mufflers seem to be out of production and are hard to find and spendy when you do find them. You may not want to modify the outlet after spending $Xyy for a tractor muffler...

Almost all the B's we sold had the under hood muffler on them. In fact we all applauded when the stack muffler came out on the B. I would guess about the time the CA came out - 1950?? So much exhaust fumes in your face.

Yes, you can use the flexible exhaust pipe to redirect the fumes. In fact, one customer had a large amount of flexible pipe and used it to kill moles. Would put it into the end of a mole hole and plug where it came out them chase them down with a dog when they appeared.

Under hood mufflers made a lot of heet under the hood caused a lot of vapor locking & hard starting when hot
